VTK Example

VTKit is a tclkit extended with the Visualisation Toolkit library for the Windows(tm) platform. It’s an all-in-one executable needed to run vtk-tcl scripts. This build of VTKit is based on VTK version 5.5.0 and Tcl/Tk version 8.5.7 . The tcl bytecode library (tbcload) is included in this binary so that compiled tcl scripts may be wrapped.

There are two main advantages of VTKit over a standard installation of VTK and Tcl/Tk:

You dont need to install it… it just works.
You can wrap your vtk-tcl scripts into a starpack, ie, a single file application.

Applicable copyrights follow the tcl/tk, kitware, and equi4 copyrights. You are free to download VTKit provided you dont hold me liable for any damage caused.

Set the VTK_DATA_ROOT environment variable, if you want to run the vtk tests or examples.

Pressing “u” will now bring up the wish console rather than the vtkInteractor
It a good idea to add this callback to a vtkRenderWindowInteractor:
“iren AddObserver ExitEvent {vtkCommand DeleteAllObjects; exit}”

for some reason tclkit VTKit 5.5.0.1.exe throws an error in Windows 7 64 bit (even when run in compatibility mode)

“couldn’t open “setup.tcl” : no such file found”

any ideas

Thanks for the report – haven’t seen that one before from a released file.

I use the same OS (Win7-64) and it runs fine. The error you are seeing usually means the executable is incomplete (specifically the runtime part). The file size should be 8,543,523 bytes. Check this and download it again if it’s not the same.

I’ll be releasing a native 64bit version soon (and the source code btw). I’ll let you know when its available.

I have to add generation of the runtime to the cmake build but its just a regular tclkit runtime with some extra stuff to provide the vtk tcl packages. I can send you a (platform independent) runtime in the meantime.

I’m finally getting back to this and since I’m new to cmake I’m a bit confused on how to setup the directories to build VTKit. Do I have to build VTK and Tcl first and then add your build files to it and rebuild?

I’m creating a how-to web page on building VTKit… in the meantime I’ll email you a pdf.

I’ll commit some runtimes to the repo (done) to save you having to create them by hand.

In the future the build will create them on the fly.
